Chimneys cop the worst of the weather and most of the leaks we trace end up at one. We repoint, re-flash and re-bed them, and where a stack is no longer used we can take it down below the roofline and tile over.
Repairs
Frost gets into old lime mortar and the joints crumble; the lead flashing around the base pulls out of the brickwork; the flaunching that holds the pots cracks. Any one of these lets water straight into the loft. We rake out and repoint, dress new lead flashings into the brick joints, and re-bed pots and cowls.
Removal
A redundant chimney is a lot of weight and maintenance for nothing. We take the stack down to just below the roofline, make good the rafters, and tile or slate over it so you would never know it was there. The breast inside the house stays as it is.
